Parkland HEALTHfirst is a Managed Care health plan offering services for people on STAR (Medicaid). Our members can choose from a network of nearly 3,000 doctors and clinics. We also have 25 hospitals and medical centers in our network. Parkland HEALTHfirst makes it easy for you to get quality care to keep you and your family healthy.

The hospitals in the Parkland HEALTHfirst network include Parkland Hospital and Children’s Medical Center, and many more. Our list of doctors includes pediatricians and specialists. We also have doctors who can give you routine checkups and immunizations to keep you healthy. Parkland HEALTHfirst also includes several local health centers that offer health services near your home.

With Parkland HEALTHfirst, you can get health education programs. You can learn how to prevent and treat certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, and asthma. You can also take health classes that can help you stay healthy. Some of the classes are prenatal classes for pregnant women and programs to help you stop smoking.

Texas Health Steps is the Medicaid health care program for children, teens and young adults, birth through age 20. You can call Texas Health Steps at 1-877-847-8377 and visit Texas Health Steps website for more information.

Dental checkups should start at 6 months of age. Dental checkups should be done every six months unless the dentist needs to see your child more often. You do not need a referral from your primary care provider. Children under 6 months of age can get dental services in an emergency. First Dental Home (FDH) is for children from age 6 months to 35 months.  To find a certified FDH provider call 1-877-847-8377

Medical checkups should be completed within the first 90 days of becoming a Parkland HEALTHfirst member. Getting a regular medical Texas Health Steps checkup is important. Your doctor will need to know your child’s health history and will want to make sure kids are up to date on shots. You and your child’s doctor can make a plan for any future care that might be needed. 

Regular Texas Health Steps checkup for babies and toddlers are done within five days after leaving the hospital, and at 2 weeks, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, 2 years and 2 1/2 years. 

For older children, an easy way to remember when Texas Health Steps medical checkups are due is to make sure it is scheduled no later than 60 days after their birthday.

  •  Children – 3 years, 4 years, 5 years, 6 years, 7 years, 8 years, 9 years, and 10 years
  •  Preteens, teens and young adults – 11 years, 12 years, 13 years, 14 years, 15 years, 16 years, 17 years 18 years, 19 years and 20 years 

Texas Health Steps will send a letter to let you know when your child or teen needs a Texas Health Steps medical or dental checkup. You can call us at the toll free number on your ID card to learn more on when checkups are due.
